Not All Sharpeners are Equal

I got a call from a hair stylist in Willits who went to the Willits Farmers Market to get her haircutting shears sharpened. She was searching for Diamond Edge , but it was an off week for us at the market. She showed them to another sharpener there at the market, who said "yes" to her question as to whether he could sharpen her shears. When she returned to pick them up, they were totally ruined and would not even cut paper. She called me to possibly try to restore them.
LESSON; Not all sharpeners are equal. Ask about training and references.  Diamond Edge Sharpening is trained in sharpening Japanese style Beauty Shears and all others as well as Clipper Blades, and we guarantee all our work and have local references to boot. This was an expensive mistake for this gal. See you all at the Farmers Markets.

Yes we can sharpen serrated knives

One of the most common questions asked by our customers is ,"can you sharpen serrated knives".
The answer is yes, and we have two approaches to this task.
If we are presented with a knife in fairly good condition, it still has deep serrations and is not chewed up, we have a triangle ceramic hone that we use to sharpen the blade . This will restore a nice edge to the valleys and the mountains with a minimal amount of flattening of the serrated edge. This technique works great for awhile, but eventually the serrations will be worn down by use. Then it's time to re-serrate the knife.

We will re-serrate any knife that has a chewed up edge or has lost it's mountains and valleys. We use a rotary grinding wheel with different size rounded edges to grind new serrations, creating a knife with equal or even better cutting ability than a new one.
So, don't toss that beat up serrated knife out. Resurrect it.

Local artists that we service

On our travels doing Farmers Markets throughout Mendocino County, we have the pleasure of keeping some of the Artists happy by making sure their tools are sharp. Here are a few that you can check out.
If you are an Artist or Craft-person using specialized tools, don't hesitate to contact us about your sharpening needs.

  • First off there is Jonathan Palmer in Fort Bragg. He came to us with some very small linoleum cutting chisels to sharpen.  Check out Jonathan's website to preview his fantastic work.
  • Next , in Mendocino there is Vicki Fraser, Rugmaker, whom with the help of Emily Whittlesey are   creating the California Rug project. Vicki uses large industrial type scissors in her work which we keep sharp for her.
  • Ellen Witherite in Fort Bragg does wonderful paper cut-outs.  Ellen uses very small delicate scissors for her work. Here are a couple of her works. Contact : herite@mcn.org.
